For people who have one or more missing teeth, dental implants are becoming an increasingly popular treatment option. Dr. Jean-Claude Kharmouche and the professionals at Nova Perio Specialists can help you decide if implants are the right course of treatment for you. There are a few situations that may require additional treatment before an implant can be placed, however. One such treatment is a sinus lift. There are three main reasons why Dr. Kharmouche may recommend a sinus lift.
1. Maxillary Sinus Is Too Close to Upper Jaw
If you willing be getting implants in your upper jaw, you need sufficient bone density. If your maxillary sinus is too close to the upper jaw, there is a risk that the implant could penetrate it. Rather than risk this, a sinus lift may be necessary to reinforce and add to the bone so there is enough space for the implant to be placed.
2. Tooth Loss Occurred a Long While Ago
Your teeth act as supports for your bone. When you lose a tooth, your bone also loses the support the roots gave to it. Over time, the bone starts to deteriorate. If your tooth loss occurred a long while ago, it may have shifted the distance between your sinus and the jawbone. In this case, a sinus lift may be necessary.
3. Tooth Decay Damaged the Jawbone
If your tooth remained in the bone but was severely decayed, that decay may have spread to the bone. This would weaken it, meaning it would need to be reinforced before placing an implant. This is another instance where a sinus lift may be beneficial.
