It is that time of the year again. Where candy, cakes, and cookies are calling out to you from every nook and cranny. This year, do not fear! Dr. Jean-Claude Kharmouche has simple tips to keep you enjoying the delights of the season while staying cavity-free.

1. Practice Healthy Habits Daily

Avoiding cavities during the holidays can be easier if you make it a habit to brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste. Along with flossing, these healthy habits will help keep your teeth cavity-free all season long.

2. Enjoy in Moderation

Do not pass on the pie! Go ahead and enjoy your favorite holiday dessert, but eat slowly and pick a healthy option for seconds at the party buffet.

3. Keep Us on Your Holiday List

We know this time of year can require a lot of your time and money but do not forget to give yourself the gift of a healthy smile by keeping your regularly scheduled maintenance cleaning.

4. Make a New Year’s Resolution

This year will be the year to finally stop biting your nails! Nail biting can temporarily reduce anxiety but it can also create long-term stress by increasing facial pain, jaw problems, and sensitive teeth.

5. Take Care of Your Teeth

Our teeth are great for chewing our food but please do not use them to open things like nuts and presents. Biting down on hard shells can seriously damage your teeth and gums. Shell nuts before eating them. Reach for the scissors to open a present. Do not rip tape or break ribbon with your teeth, or you could chip or crack a tooth requiring a root canal and crown to fix it. Avoid biting down on peppermints or chewing that ice in the bottom of your cocktail glass to avoid a dental emergency.
