Types of Gum Grafting

There are three types of gum grafting surgery. The type we use will depend on your own unique situation, the degree of gum disease that you have experienced, and your specific needs.

Why is gum surgery necessary?

The gum tissue is primarily responsible for protecting your teeth against plaque and bacteria. As the gum line recedes, a larger area of the tooth becomes exposed and subject to decay. Eventually, the root of the tooth will be exposed. This is especially dangerous, as it can increase the rate and frequency with which cavities develop. In extreme cases, tooth loss may even occur.

There are also several issues that can affect your appearance and comfort. With a larger area of the tooth exposed, it can look “longer” and less attractive than usual. Also, when the root becomes exposed, an increase in temperature sensitivity may occur. This makes it difficult to eat foods that are extremely hot or cold.

How does gum surgery work?

Gum grafting is a procedure that restores the gum line to a healthier, more attractive level. Patients in need of a gum graft in Sterling, Leesburg & Gainesville VA can contact the NOVA Perio Specialists for more information.

Gum Grafting

Gum grafting is a type of gum surgery that involves taking a tissue sample from one area of the mouth and grafting it onto the gum line. There are three main types of gum grafting:

2

Connective Tissue Graft

First, a skin flap is made on the roof of the mouth. Then, the tissue sample is taken from underneath the skin flap and grafted to the gums.

3

Free Gingival Graft

This is similar to a connective tissue graft, except that there is no need to cut a skin flap. The tissue is taken straight from the roof of the mouth.

4

Pedicle Graft

A skin flap is made from the gum line and pulled over so that the root is covered. Sutures are then used to hold it in place.
