Why Should I Have The Procedure?

Excess gum tissue can make your teeth look short or your smile appear more “gummy” than usual. Esthetic crown lengthening is a procedure in which Dr. Jean-Claude Kharmouche removes extra gum tissue to give your smile a more attractive and natural appearance. This is a great option for patients who feel they have a gummy smile in Sterling, Leesburg, & Aldie VA.

What Is Esthetic Crown Lengthening?

Esthetic crown lengthening is most often used to prepare the mouth for a cosmetic restorative procedure or to remove tissue to correct a gummy smile. By reshaping the contour of bone and gum tissue, it is possible to expose a larger portion of the tooth and give your smile a more natural appearance.

Esthetic crown lengthening can be used on single or multiple teeth.

How does it work?

Before beginning the crown lengthening procedure, your doctor will administer a local anesthetic. Next, small incisions are made around the gum tissue to separate it from the teeth. This is done to allow access to more of the tooth structure as well as the jaw bone. Then, instruments are used to remove a small section of bone and reshape the area, if necessary. In some cases, simply removing a small amount of soft tissue is all that is needed.

When the appropriate amount of tooth structure has become properly exposed, you doctor will clean and sterilize the area and suture it closed. Prescription pain medication may be prescribed along with an anti-bacterial mouth rinse. Healing usually takes between two and three months to complete.

The length of the procedure will mostly depend on how many teeth are involved and the amount of bone or soft tissue that needs to be removed.
